Ask Your Representative To Sign “Dear Colleague Letter”

Representative Gwen Moore (D-WI) is circulating a “Dear Colleague” letter asking other members of the House to join her in requesting that Rep. David Obey (D-WI), Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, include the following housing funds in the economic recovery package:

  • $10 billion for the National Housing Trust Fund.
  • $3.6 billion for 200,000 additional housing choice vouchers each year for two years.
  • $2 billion for the Emergency Shelter Grant (ESG) program to help families avoid eviction or to obtain new housing.

Chairman Obey released the American Recovery and Reinvestment Bill today. It includes $1.5 billion for ESG, but no funding for the National Housing Trust Fund or vouchers. The full Appropriations Committee is expected to mark up the bill as early as Wednesday, January 21.
